It’s hard to deny that Nice and the French Riviera is a bit pricey. But that shouldn’t stop you from visiting the beautiful coast cities along the Mediterranean. With a bit of imagination, it’s easy to find a few free things to do to fill your time in the sun-soaked coastal region of France. Below are five free things to do in Nice.
Spend some time on the beach
A visit to the French Riviera wouldn’t be complete without a few hours of laying on the beach! If you’re looking for a totally free beach experience, bring your towel/chair/sweater for something on which to lay. The pebble beach is a little uncomfortable so it’s best to have something soft on which to sit. If you’re looking to splurge on a bit of luxury, you can always visit the private beaches. (Info on them here: Nice private beaches)
Take in the view
A short hike up to Castle Hill in the west end of the city will totally reward you with spectacular views. You will benefit from the views at any time of day. There are two ways to reach the top. The first is taking the steps from the Promenade des Anglais. The second option is to take the winding steps off of Rue de la Providence. The latter option is a little less crowded and you’ll have a wonderful stroll along the Cimetière Israélite.
Wander Old Nice
Old Nice is located at the foot of Castle Hill, so you will surely walk through it (or passed it) on your way to the top. Old Nice is a cluster of winding streets. It is the perfect mass of narrow alleys in which to get lost. Forgo the map and discover tiny boutiques, unique shops and fabulous restaurants.
Admire artists and free entertainment
Place Masséna is a great place to wander and enjoy the free entertainment from various artists and musicians. The large square often unofficially hosts musicians creating the perfect soundtrack to your stroll through Old Nice. In the evening, look out for spray-paint artist. Watching them create and guessing the image is fascinating before the big reveal. They often sell their art which is guaranteed to make a memorable souvenir.
Visit a museum
This one comes with an exception. The Musée des Beaux Arts and the Matisse Museum are both free to students and anyone under 18. However, if you don’t fit in either of those categories, the admission is quite reasonable at €10.
